{"id":487796,"date":"2026-07-13T13:36:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T12:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sportspro.com\/?p=487796"},"modified":"2026-07-13T13:36:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T12:36:06","slug":"seattle-seahawks-nfl-sale-vinod-khosla-family-july-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sportspro.com\/news\/finance-investment\/seattle-seahawks-nfl-sale-vinod-khosla-family-july-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Seattle Seahawks sold for NFL record \u2018US$9.61bn\u2019 as US franchise valuations soar"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Khoslas obligated to sell 49ers stake as part of deal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Previous NFL team record sale was US$6.05bn<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Allen family previously sold NBA\u2019s Trail Blazers for US$4bn<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The Allen family have sold the Seattle Seahawks to a group led by San Francisco 49ers minority owner Vinod Khosla for a National Football League (NFL) record US$9.61 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In becoming the controlling owners of the Super Bowl LX champions, the Khosla family will be obligated to sell their 3.1 per cent stake in the 49ers to comply with NFL rules that prohibit owners from holding shares in multiple franchises.<\/p>\n<p>Forbes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/vinod-khosla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> Vinod Khosla&#8217;s net worth at US$13.7 billion, with his wife Neeru Khosla nominated as controlling owner and other family members expected to take up leadership roles.<\/p>\n<p>The Khoslas reportedly beat a rival bid from a group led by Indian billionaire Aditya Mittal, a co-owner of the Boston Celtics. His family assumed operations of the team, putting it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportspro.com\/news\/finance-investment\/seattle-seahawks-sale-paul-allen-estate-ownership-nfl-february-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up for sale<\/a> shortly after victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Sale proceeds will go to charity, as set out by Allen\u2019s will. The Allen family recently also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportspro.com\/news\/finance-investment\/portland-trail-blazers-sale-agreed-tom-dundon-paul-allen-estate-september-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold<\/a> the NBA\u2019s Portland Trail Blazers to Tom Dundon, whose group paid around US$4 billion for the team.<\/p>\n<p>The record price tag for the Seahawks far exceeds the US$6.05 billion paid by the Josh Harris-led consortium for the Washington Commanders in 2023, the last time an NFL team changed hands, as well as Forbes\u2019 most recent US$6.7 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/justinteitelbaum\/2025\/08\/28\/the-nfls-most-valuable-teams-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">valuation<\/a> of the franchise.<\/p>\n<p>The premium can be attributed to scarcity of opportunity to own a team, huge predictable revenues, as well as the league\u2019s incredibly ability to identify further sources of growth. Financials from the Green Bay Packers, the NFL\u2019s only publicly owned team, revealed each franchises earned US$432.6 million in centralised revenue last season.<\/p>\n<p>The league has been particularly skilled at growing media revenues and is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportspro.com\/news\/broadcast-ott\/nfl-cbs-paramount-media-rights-price-march-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renegotiating<\/a> its US$110 billion, 11-year domestic broadcast agreements, which are due to expire in 2032. The league is set to exercise an opt-out from these contracts in 2029 but hopes to secure as much as a 50 per cent uplift from some partners as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>That Forbes ranked the Seahawks as only the 14<sup>th<\/sup> most valuable franchise in the NFL suggests that a ceiling has not yet been reached. Indeed this latest transaction, coupled with any increase in broadcast income could dramatically rest expectations in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"min-height:441px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-rxAMD\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/rxAMD\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-rxAMD\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/rxAMD\/full.png\" alt=\"The five highest NFL franchise sale prices (Column Chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n\n\n<hr \/>\n<p>However, rising valuations have limited the number of consortiums, never mind individuals who are capable of paying such sums.<\/p>\n<p>To make it easier for others to share in the NFL\u2019s growth, and to allow existing owners to more easily benefit from surging valuations, the league now permits approved private equity investors to acquire minority stakes in individual franchises. A minority stake in the Miami Dolphins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportspro.com\/news\/finance-investment\/miami-dolphins-lin-bin-investment-stake-record-valuation-march-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold earlier this year<\/a> at a valuation of US$12.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Interest in the Seahawks also reflects investor demand for major league franchises more widely. Mark Walter acquired the National Basketball Association\u2019s (NBA) Los Angeles Lakers last year for US$10 billion \u2013 a record purchase price for a US sports team \u2013 while valuations are surging in the National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Baseball (MLB).<\/p>\n<p>Expansion is also on the horizon for at least two leagues keen to capitalise on growing media revenues. MLB plans to increase from 30 to 32 teams in the near future, while the NBA is actively courting new markets after securing new US$76 billion domestic media rights deals.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, Seattle is widely expected to secure an NBA expansion franchise in a sale that could reinforce expectations for premium sports team prices across North America.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure
