The National Football League’s (NFL) new flag football league will reportedly be operated by TMRW Sports, the tech-focused sports venture backed by golfers Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
The league has been searching for a partner to operate the league since last December when team owners approved a US$32 million investment to develop the competition.
TMRW Sports, best known for operating indoor technology-focused golf league TGL, beat competition from 12 other groups to secure the rights, according to Sportico.
Co-founded in 2022 by Woods and McIlroy, TMRW Sports has assembled an extensive roster of backers, including private equity firm Dynasty Equity, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and Washington Commanders minority owner David Blitzer. The venture was reportedly valued at US$500 million in a Series A funding round that took place in 2024.
Last month, TMRW confirmed it would launch the women’s golf league WTGL alongside the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). It has secured Trybe Ventures, the investment vehicle co-founded by US soccer icon Alex Morgan, as the league’s lead capital partner.
No timeline has been given for the NFL’s plans for its flag football league, with commissioner Roger Goodell previously saying there is a commitment to have the competition up and running “in the next couple of years”. This would mean the league would be operational ahead of flag football’s Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.
According to Sports Business Journal (SBJ), the league will be launched as a single entity, with the possibility of selling franchises in the future. The NFL is said to be continuing a process to secure additional investors for the tournament.
