Sponsors of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have not voiced any concerns about Casey Wasserman continuing in his role as chair, according to the chief executive of the local organising committee.

Wasserman’s position has come under intense scrutiny after his emails to Ghislaine Maxwell were made public as part of the release of files related to the US government’s investigation into disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The 51-year-old (pictured above, left) has appointed Moelis & Co to oversee the sale of his eponymous global agency in light of the revelations. However, he has retained the backing of the LA28 board to continue overseeing the delivery of the Games.

Speaking for the first time since Wasserman’s emails were made public, LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover (pictured above, right) backed the event’s embattled chair to remain in his role and insisted no current or potential commercial partners have expressed concern.

“I was at a meeting in Dallas with a potential sponsor – hopefully we’ll get them signed up – and it wasn’t even raised,” said Hoover. “No one is asking about it.”

While Wasserman has the support of LA28 executives, Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass has called for his resignation, with Hoover admitting the comments left him “a little surprised”.

“Look, that’s her opinion,” he said. “But she also said that the LA28 board has taken a position and is supporting Casey, so there’s nothing more to really be said on it. The board has taken their position – they support him and I support him.”

Hoover pointed to the commercial performance of the Games as evidence of stable leadership. LA28 recently announced it has received five million registrations for its ticket draw and the event has already surpassed US$2 billion in sponsorship revenue, which means the organising committee is just short of its US$2.5 billion target with more than two years until the opening ceremony.

Hoover added that another top-tier sponsor is set to be announced for LA28, whose founding partners include Google, Delta Airlines, Intuit, Honda, Korn Ferry and Comcast.

“We’ve exceeded all expectations, we’ve broken all Olympic records by any measure,” Hoover added. “If that doesn’t give people confidence, I don’t know what will.”
