Germany has been named as host of Uefa Women’s Euro 2029.
Key details:
- Germany chosen ahead of Poland and joint bid from Denmark and Sweden
- Sixteen-team summer tournament will take place across eight venues in Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich and Wolfsburg
Context:
Germany’s bid was a convincing winner with 15 votes from Uefa’s executive committee. Denmark and Sweden got two votes and Poland received none.
The 2029 finals will mark the third time that eight-time winners Germany has hosted the Euros, having staged the event in 2001 and as West Germany in 1989, winning both times.
Portugal and Italy had initially been in the running for Euro 2029, having submitted dossiers to host the tournament, but withdrew from the process to focus on bids to co-host the men’s Euro 2032 and 2030 Fifa World Cup.
Comment:
“I want to sincerely thank all three bid delegations for their tireless work and commitment throughout the process,” said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin. “Each bid showcased vision and exceptional teamwork and I am sad that we had to choose only one.
“Congratulations to Germany! We look forward to an unforgettable tournament in the summer of 2029.”
