A new showjumping competition offering US$300 million in prize money is launching next year with backing from Frank McCourt, owner of French soccer heavyweights Olympique de Marseille.

Context:
The PJL aims to broaden the appeal of showjumping by blending elite athletic performance with premium entertainment, while respecting the sport’s heritage. As well as investment from McCourt, the league has secured a partnership with Box to Box Films, the production company behind the Netflix hit series ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’, and plans to offer a free-to-view broadcasting model to boost visibility. The league will also look to incorporate cutting-edge technology and innovative team formats to enhance its broader appeal.
The backing of McCourt, who will serve as PJL chairman, marks the latest high-profile investor getting involved in equestrianism. In January, CVC Capital Partners’ Global Sport Group (GSG) division confirmed the purchase of a majority stake in Equine Network from Growth Catalyst Partners.
McCourt himself has previous experience in equestrian through stakes in the Global Champions League (GCL) and the Miami Celtics team.
