The next phase of sports investment: Nine insights from CVC-backed GSG chair Marc Allera

SportsPro

Private equity has increasing its interest in sport over the past decade, but one investor with a longstanding presence in the sector is CVC Capital Partners.

Since 2018, CVC has made multibillion-dollar investments to secure stakes in sports organisations including LaLiga, Premiership Rugby and the Women’s Tennis Association. More recently, the company launched Global Sport Group, a new division to hold its US$13.6 billion of sports properties, representing a move from individual investments to a coordinated, platform-driven strategy.

At SportsPro New York in March, GSG chair Marc Allera outlined the thinking behind the launch and what it signals about the next phase of sports investment. The rationale is that sport remains one of the most valuable forms of intellectual property (IP) in a rapidly changing media landscape, but it is also highly fragmented. As streaming, data and technology reshape the industry, there is therefore an opportunity to consolidate, scale and professionalise how sports properties are managed and monetised.

GSG’s approach is built on leveraging data to better understand and monetise fans, creating synergies across its portfolio of properties, and taking a long-term view on value creation. The model is also designed to bring operational expertise and facilitate shared learnings and strategic alignment across assets.

The discussion also covered broader industry dynamics, from the resilience of live sports content in an AI-driven world to the increasing importance of diversification beyond media rights revenues.

Here are ten key takeaways from the session.

1. GSG reflects a shift from individual deals to a platform strategy

The creation of GSG signals a move towards aggregating sports assets into a single platform to unlock scale, efficiencies and shared value across investments.

2. Consolidation will drive the next phase of sports investment

Sport remains highly fragmented compared to other industries, and platforms like GSG are positioning themselves to play a key role in future consolidation.

3. Premium IP remains the foundation of investment

GSG’s first investment was the purchase of a majority stake in the Equine Network for a reported US$300 million. The new division is focused on leagues with long-standing history and strong IP, recognising that sport is one of the most resilient and valuable forms of content.

4. Live sport is still powerful in the age of content saturation

In an era of infinite content and AI disruption, live sport remains irreplaceable as appointment viewing and a key driver of audience attention.

5. Data and fan insights are critical to growth

The ability to understand and segment audiences is becoming essential for driving media value, sponsorship revenue and long-term engagement. While broadcast remains a key revenue stream, areas such as gaming, betting, sponsorship and data-driven products are increasingly important growth drivers.

6. Portfolio synergies create a competitive advantage

By sharing learnings, strategies and capabilities across leagues, GSG can accelerate growth and improve performance across its portfolio.

7. Long-term thinking is essential

Unlike other sectors, sports investments require patience, with value created over time through strategic development rather than focusing on short-term gains.

8. Diversification is central to GSG’s playbook

Investments like the Equine Network highlight the importance of diversifying across geographies, sports and revenue models to reduce risk and unlock new opportunities.

9. Success depends on more than capital alone

The real differentiator for private equity is the ability to bring expertise, talent and strategic guidance to unlock value alongside financial investment.

Final thought

GSG represents a more mature, strategic phase of private equity in sport. As the industry evolves, success will depend less on simply acquiring assets and more on building platforms that can scale, innovate and create value across an increasingly complex ecosystem.
